Teilnehmerrekord beim European Satellite Navigation Competition 2008

The 5th European Satellite Navigation Competition came to a close last week after again setting a new participation record. Having sought the most innovative potential applications in the field of satellite-aided navigation in 13 global regions each year since 2004, the competition nearly doubled its number of participants for the second consecutive year.

Since early May, 525 have answered the call - 293 of them will now be subject to evaluation by an international panel of experts. Leading all regions this year in terms of volume of ideas was first-time participant Taipei. Which region will have the right to call itself the competition's overall winner - the GALILEO Master - will be decided at the end of this September, when representatives from all of the regional expert teams will meet on the Cote d'Azur in Sophia Antipolis, the winning region from 2007.

The goal of the European Satellite Navigation Competition is to realise submitted ideas in cooperation with business incubation centres in its partner regions and with competition sponsors. Along with the German Aerospace Center - which supports the competition as a global partner -the title sponsor T-Systems, the DHL Innovation Center, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan, and the European GNSS Supervisory Authority (GSA) have joined the competition as special prize sponsors. This year, these sponsors were seeking solutions in the field of freight volume optimisation, innovative gaming concepts, and potential applications for EGNOS, Europe's differential system for GPS. Of all those submitting ideas, 80 percent also applied for consideration for one of these special topic prizes.

The solutions submitted will be evaluated by over 100 industry and research experts from all over the world before the overall winner is nominated on the Cote d'Azur at the end of September. The regional and special prize winners, as well as the GALILEO Master, will be announced at a state reception hosted at the Munich Residenz by the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport, and Technology, Emilia Müller, on October 21. From October 21-24, the winners will then present their application ideas in the Navigation World area of this year's SYSTEMS trade show.
